Nexus of Fate

The Ancient known as Lord Chronos stood on a raised platform in the spherical chamber he had crafted within his pocket dimension. Before him shimmered the web of timelines—thick primary lines branching into countless thinner alternate paths, each a reality known to him and his alternate selves. He tucked his walking swagger stick under his arm, adjusting the cuffs of his finely tailored three-piece suit with practiced elegance. With a gesture, the web collapsed to their current timeline, halting at the present moment.

He counted down silently, then heard the crack of thunder from the vestibule. Precisely on cue, Raiden flung open the chamber doors with a flourish, clad in his traditional ancient Japanese attire, staff in hand, eyes crackling with electricity.

"Ah, Lord Raiden. You requested an audience?"

Raiden scowled. "Don't play games with me—you know damn well why!"

Chronos sighed. "I was trying to be polite. You have many reasons, but the most likely concerns the essence I gave you."

Raiden's anger cooled slightly. "My apologies. I sometimes forget you see multiple outcomes. You're correct—what exactly is Sonya?"

Chronos shrugged. "As I told you, a possible way to end Carthain."

Raiden's frustration flared. "That doesn't answer my question, and you know it!"

Chronos raised an eyebrow. "You asked no questions when I gave her to you. Why the sudden concern?"

Raiden gestured sharply. "Because of Ta'charin! She was immune to my power, and I can't tell who controls the nexus now."

Chronos smirked. "Sonya disrupts the long balance of power. You'll find no god—Ancient or otherwise—can affect her."

Raiden's eyes narrowed. "But she serves on the Avenger. How can any divine being survive there? The residual Reflex radiation would kill them painfully."

"Very true." Chronos paused. "Who—or what—does Carthain fear?"

Raiden frowned. "Another Ancient more powerful than him. But the only ones alive who could stop him and would are you... and Elune."

"Exactly."

Raiden stepped forward, alarmed. "You're not thinking of freeing Elune? We imprisoned her for a reason."

Chronos turned to the timeline display. "The Elder Gods imprisoned her because you all feared her."

Raiden gestured wildly. "Everyone feared her! Defeating her would have devastated everything—not everyone was certain we could win, especially if she called the Cartyr." He paused, realization dawning. "Yet you convinced her to surrender peacefully."

Chronos turned back, smiling as Raiden connected the pieces. "I did."

Raiden's shock was palpable. "Then millennia later, you hand me that container with an essence... Why didn't I see it? Sonya's the Tam'balic—the Cartyr priests' prophesied savior who'll free Elune! That's why she surrendered so willingly—you're trying to free her!"

Chronos nodded. "Yes, that was our arrangement. Though I never specified when she might be released."

Raiden's voice rose. "She'll seek vengeance against her captors!"

Chronos shrugged. "Possibly. Though those who voiced reservations about her imprisonment needn't worry."

"That's a very short list, and you know it."

Chronos smirked. "Indeed. Though there will be consideration for the one who protected the Tam'balic as she grew up."

Raiden glared. "I'll be sure to mention that before she blasts me." He shook his head. "One thing I still don't understand—what is Sonya? She can't be a simulacrum; they don't survive that long."

Chronos's smirk widened. "She's different. Special. One of a kind."

Raiden's face twisted with a mix of awe and frustration. "One of a kind? That's all you'll give me? After all this time?"

Chronos's expression grew serious, his eyes gleaming with the weight of eons. "Some truths unfold in their own time, Raiden. Meddle too much, and you risk unraveling more than you bargain for."

Raiden clenched his staff, electricity crackling along its length. "Fine. Keep your secrets—for now. But if this 'one of a kind' turns against us, the blood's on your hands." With a final glare, he turned, the doors swinging open as thunder boomed once more. He stepped into the storm, vanishing in a flash of lightning.

Chronos watched him depart, a faint smile returning to his lips. The web of timelines shimmered behind him, one strand glowing brighter than the others. "The pieces are moving," he murmured to the empty chamber. "And the game is far from over."
