Six months ago, Sable-Star was three people and a stray, an alchemist with more ambition than sense, a fae exile hiding wings she can't afford to show anyone, and a woman who'd rather bury a knife than talk about her past. Then the offers came fast: a guild permit nobody else wanted, a house with too many empty rooms, and a dungeon called the Undercroft that goes down a lot farther than anyone's willing to say out loud.
Floor by floor, William and the found family he's building clear a network of chambers older than the guild that licenses them, beetle glands and locked doors giving way to sealed vaults, dormant stasis fields, and construction marks belonging to a civilization the history books insist never existed. Every floor they clean out pays the mortgage. Every floor also asks a harder question about who built the Undercroft, and what it's still trying to keep contained.
When a routine unsealing pulls in an impossible survivor from decades past, and a secret one of their own has been carrying can't stay buried any longer, William has to decide how much further down he's willing to take the people he loves and what's waiting for all of them if they stop.
The world is older, bigger, and hungrier than any of them signed up for. And they're only on Floor Eight.
